Licence terms
End-user licence agreement (EULA) · Version of 29 October 2026
These terms say how you may use Arietto. Points that may surprise you are marked Please note.
1. Who we are
Arietto is made by Kammerwerk Technologies GmbH, Dr. Rasper-Straße 17a/11, 4802 Ebensee am Traunsee, Austria (FN 686275 d, Landesgericht Wels), contact@arietto.com ("we"). Its author, Lucas Campara Diniz, keeps the copyright. We license Arietto to you with his permission.
You buy Arietto, or a subscription to it, from Paddle (Paddle.com Market Ltd; in the United States, Paddle.com Inc.), which sells it for us, takes the payment, issues the invoice and makes refunds. Paddle's buyer terms cover the purchase. These terms are a separate contract between you and us about using Arietto. They also cover the free trial and licences we give away.
The English and German versions are equally binding. Where they seem to differ, the meaning that is better for you applies.
2. What you may do
- Try it. For 30 days from the first start, every feature works without a key.
- Keep it. A purchase gives you a permanent licence for Arietto 1, which means all versions 1.x. It does not expire.
- Or subscribe. A subscription gives you a licence for as long as it runs, for every version we publish in that time (section 12).
- Two Macs. Either way, you may use Arietto on up to two Macs at the same time, for example a desktop and a laptop, for your own use. If an organisation buys licences, each licence is for one person.
- Your licence is personal. It cannot be transferred, and your key is for you alone: please don't sell, rent or hand it out, and don't let others use it beyond this section. If someone else is to have your Arietto, we give them a licence of their own (section 5).
- Your music is yours. We claim no rights in what you write, export or record with Arietto. Use it as you like, including commercially. (Section 10 has one limit for business customers, on using Arietto itself to make training material for other programs.)
3. Activation, and what it sends
Please note: a licence works on a Mac only after that Mac has been activated once over the internet.
- Activation sends your key, which contains the name and email address given at purchase. It also sends a machine code worked out from the Mac's hardware identifier, and the Mac's model name, such as "MacBook Pro". It never sends your computer's own name.
- Until the activation gets through, you can work fully for 2 days while Arietto keeps trying. A Mac without internet can be activated with a file from your licence page. After activation, Arietto needs no account, no log-in and no internet.
- At each start with internet access, Arietto fetches a small signed licence list from arietto.com and never waits for it. The list names keys that have been blocked, Macs that have been disconnected and subscriptions that have ended; that is how Arietto learns of them. Fetching it sends nothing about you or your licence; our server sees only ordinary connection data, such as your IP address.
- On your licence page, arietto.com/license, you can see which Macs use your key, disconnect one and activate another, at any time. Please note: your key is the only login, so anyone who has it can do this too. A disconnected Mac that still holds your key takes a free slot back when Arietto next starts on it. Before you hand a Mac on, choose "Deactivate This Mac" on it.
Our privacy notice for the app says what we do with this data: arietto.com/privacy/app/.
4. Read-only, never locked out
Please note: Arietto becomes read-only on a Mac
- when the trial has ended and no licence is active;
- when 2 days have passed without the activation getting through;
- when the Mac was disconnected on your licence page and no slot is free for it;
- when a subscription has ended and no other licence is active (section 12);
- when a licence has ended or a key has been blocked (section 5).
Read-only means you can still open, view, play, print, export and save everything, but you cannot edit it. Arietto never deletes or changes your files on its own. Editing comes back as soon as the Mac is activated again.
5. When a licence ends
A purchased licence is permanent. It ends only
- at your request, for example when someone else takes over your Arietto (below);
- when you get your money back: through our money-back promise (section 7), a withdrawal from the purchase or a chargeback. If a chargeback is decided in our favour, we restore the licence;
- Please note: when you knowingly share or publish your key beyond what section 2 allows, and you don't stop within 14 days after we have written to you about it;
- Please note: when you knowingly break section 10, and you don't stop, and undo what can be undone, within 14 days after we have written to you about it. If it cannot be undone, for example because you have already passed on code taken from Arietto, the licence ends when we tell you so in writing.
A subscription licence ends in the same cases, and also when the subscription ends (section 12).
If someone else is to have your Arietto. Your licence cannot be transferred. Instead, at your request, we end your licence and give the person who takes over a licence of their own, with a new key in their name, free of charge. It gives them the same rights your licence gave you, counted from your purchase. To ask for it, choose "Deactivate This Mac" on your Macs, stop using Arietto, and send us the new owner's name and email address. Your old key then stops working. This applies to purchased licences; a subscription cannot be taken over.
If your key appears in public, even through no fault of yours, we may block it at once. We then send you a new key free of charge.
When a licence ends or a key is blocked, Arietto becomes read-only on the Macs concerned (section 4). If you think we have made a mistake, write to us. A person will look at it and put it right.
6. Updates and fixes
- Updates with a purchase. Your purchase includes every update to Arietto 1 (versions 1.x) that we publish, and in any case a year of updates: if we publish Arietto 2 within a year of your purchase, you get it free. After that, buying a new major version is up to you. What you have keeps working.
- Updates with a subscription. Every update we publish while it runs, new major versions included (section 12).
- Security and compatibility fixes are free until five years after Arietto 1 is released. Until then we fix security problems in Arietto 1, and problems that stop it working on macOS versions released before that date, even after Arietto 2 has come out.
- Getting them. You download updates from arietto.com. We email you, at the address on your licence, about security fixes and about updates you are entitled to. If a later version can update itself, it will tell you, and you can switch that off.
- Please note: if you don't install an update we have told you about, we are not responsible for a defect that only that update would have fixed.
Arietto needs macOS 13 or later.
7. Money back and warranty
- Money-back promise. If Arietto turns out not to be for you, write to us within 30 days of your purchase, or of the first payment of a subscription. We refund the full amount through Paddle, and you don't have to give a reason. Your licence then ends (section 5), and a subscription with it. Kammerwerk Technologies GmbH (address in section 1) gives this promise in addition to your legal rights. It does not limit them.
- Warranty. You have the full statutory warranty for defects, for a subscription for as long as it runs. In law the seller is Paddle, but write to us first: we will put the defect right ourselves. Nothing in these terms limits your statutory rights.
8. AI features
Ask Arietto, the Layout Assistant and voice input are optional AI features, marked "AI". Ask Arietto and the Layout Assistant turn what you type into changes to your score or into layout suggestions; voice input turns what you say into text for Ask Arietto.
- They work with two models that come with Arietto: a language model (Microsoft Phi-4-mini) and a speech model (OpenAI Whisper, for English). Both are other people's work under the MIT licence (see section 9).
- They run entirely on your Mac. Nothing you type or say leaves it. Voice input records only while you hold the key down, turns your speech into text on your Mac and keeps no recording. macOS asks for your permission the first time.
- They need a Mac with Apple silicon. On a Mac with an Intel processor they are switched off, and Arietto says so; everything else in Arietto works as usual.
- Please note: AI can misunderstand you and make changes you did not mean, for example removing bars, instruments or markings. Check what it does. You can undo its changes with ⌘Z, like any other edit.
9. Parts made by others
Arietto contains or works with parts made by others: fonts (SIL Open Font License), software libraries (MIT, Apache, BSD, Mozilla Public License and similar licences), the sampled instruments that come with Arietto for playback (Creative Commons and MIT licences), and the language and speech models that come with Arietto for its AI features (Microsoft Phi-4-mini and OpenAI Whisper, both under the MIT licence).
Each part stays under its own licence. Nothing in these terms limits what those licences allow you. They are listed in Help › Acknowledgements & Credits and in the folder Contents/Resources/licenses inside the app.
If you publish audio made with Arietto's sampled instruments, the Creative Commons Attribution licence of some of them may require you to credit their authors. The credits say which ones these are and how to credit them.
Phi is a trademark of the Microsoft group of companies. Arietto is not affiliated with Microsoft or OpenAI.
10. Protecting Arietto, and what the law always lets you do
Please note: to protect Arietto, you may not
- decompile, disassemble or otherwise reverse engineer Arietto, except as allowed below;
- modify Arietto, except to correct an error as allowed below;
- copy Arietto's own code, graphics or data files, or any font of our own, out of the app, or use them in or for anything else;
- take the engraving or playback rules built into Arietto's code or data files, for example spacing and layout tables, house-style values or playback curves, out of them to use elsewhere;
- get around, switch off or remove the activation, the licence checks, the read-only mode or any other technical protection of Arietto, except as far as correcting an error or decompiling, as allowed below, requires it;
- remove or change copyright notices;
- use Arietto's own code, graphics, data files or fonts, or anything you obtained by doing what this list forbids, to build, train or improve another notation, engraving or playback program;
- help anyone else to do any of these things.
This is also our express reservation of Arietto and all its parts against text and data mining.
What this section does not touch.
- Your own music and files: what you write, export or record with Arietto, and the house styles and settings you make (section 2). We claim no rights in them.
- Parts made by others (section 9): they stay under their own licences, and this section does not restrict them.
- Using Arietto as intended: running it as we deliver it, and adapting it to your needs through its own settings, house styles and options.
What the law always lets you do. These rights hold whatever this section says, but only within their legal limits (§§ 40d and 40e of the Austrian Copyright Act):
- A backup copy, as far as you need it to keep using Arietto.
- Observing and testing. While you load, display, run or store Arietto as this licence allows, you may observe, study and test how it works, to find the ideas and principles behind any part of it.
- Correcting an error. If an error stops Arietto working as intended, and we have not corrected it within a reasonable time after you told us about it, you may correct it yourself. You may change and decompile Arietto only as far as that correction needs.
- Decompiling for interoperability, only if all of these apply:
- it is indispensable for getting the information needed to make a program created independently of Arietto work with Arietto or with other programs;
- you, or someone acting for you, are entitled to use this copy of Arietto;
- that information is not already readily available to you. Arietto reads and writes MusicXML and MIDI, and you can ask us. If we give you the information, decompiling is no longer allowed;
- you decompile only the parts of Arietto needed for that.
You may use the information only for that interoperability. You may pass it on only where that interoperability requires it. You may never use it to develop, copy or distribute a program substantially similar to Arietto in its expression, or for anything else that infringes copyright.
Please note: if you knowingly break this section, we may end your licence (section 5). The author's rights and ours, for example under copyright law, are not affected.
Please note, if you are a business customer:
- You also may not use Arietto to produce material for training or improving another notation, engraving or playback program, for example by exporting scores in bulk for that purpose. This limits only how you use Arietto: we claim no rights in your music, and what you write, export or record with Arietto stays yours (section 2).
- You make sure that everyone who uses Arietto under your licences keeps to this section.
- If you, or someone who uses Arietto under your licences, knowingly breaks this section, you pay us a contractual penalty of EUR 25,000 for each breach. If the damage is higher, we can claim the difference as well. This does not apply to anything the law always lets you do.
11. Liability
- We are fully liable for damage we cause intentionally or through gross negligence, for injury to a person, under product liability law, and for anything we promise in a guarantee.
- Please note: for damage caused by slight negligence, we are liable only for the typical damage we could foresee when the contract was made.
- If you lose data because of a fault in Arietto, your claim is reduced to the extent that regular backups would have prevented the loss. Arietto always lets you export your music, so keep copies of important work.
- Please note, if you are a business customer: we are not liable for slight negligence at all, except for injury to a person and under product liability law.
12. Subscriptions
- What it includes. A subscription runs monthly or yearly, at the price shown at checkout. While it runs, you have a licence for Arietto on the terms of sections 2 to 11, and every update we publish, new major versions included. Paddle sells it, as it sells a purchase.
- Renewal. It renews itself for the same period until you end it. Before a yearly subscription renews, we email you 30 days ahead with the price and how to end it.
- Ending it. You can end it yourself at any time, through Paddle's customer portal or the link in every Paddle email about your subscription, or by writing to us. It then stops at the end of the period you have paid for. Once a yearly subscription has renewed, you can also have it stop at the end of the current month; we then refund the months not yet begun. If a renewal payment fails and is not made up, the subscription ends.
- When it ends. Arietto becomes read-only (section 4), as after a trial: your scores still open, play, print, export and save. Arietto learns that a subscription has ended from the licence list (section 3), so a subscription needs no log-in either.
- Price. We change the price of a running subscription only if you agree. If you don't, it ends at the end of the period you have paid for.
- Changes to Arietto. While it runs, we may change Arietto through updates, to improve it, to fix errors, or to keep it working with macOS and with the law. This costs you nothing extra. If a change makes Arietto clearly worse for you, we tell you by email beforehand, and you may end the subscription within 30 days of being told, or of the change if that comes later; we then refund the part you have not used.
13. Changes to these terms
These terms stay as they are for your licence. If we ever want to change them, we will ask you. If you don't agree, nothing changes for you. A new major version you buy may come with new terms, which you see before you buy.
14. Law, courts and help
- Austrian law applies, without the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection that the mandatory law of your home country gives you.
- If you are a consumer, we can only take you to court where you live. If you live in the EU, you can take us to court in your home country or in Austria. For business customers, the court competent for Ebensee am Traunsee, Austria, decides.
- If one clause is invalid, the rest stays valid.
- Questions, support, money back and ending a subscription: contact@arietto.com.
